Retaining Walls: Drought-Tolerant Xeriscaping Ideas

We all know what it’s like to have that spot in your yard that is just an eyesore: your retaining wall. Our client took her plain gray wall and put plants on top of it to beautify it and make that wall pop!

 1. Keep it Cohesive but Interesting

The mix of our tall and slender Emperor Agaves paired with the short and round barrel cacti are a match made in heaven. The opposite shapes of the agaves and barrel cacti really add visual interest to the wall, while sticking with only two types of plants adds cohesion throughout the entire look. Adding too many plants can quickly made things look messy or unplanned, especially if you aren't a professional landscape designer.

 2. Keep it Low Maintenance

One important thing to note in tackling a project like this is that creating a minimal or zero maintenance space will really help you keep this area looking its best. Retaining walls are often in awkward places or heights, and the last thing you want to do is to be constantly climbing to maintain the space. This client went with our zero-maintenance agave and a very low-maintenance cactus to make sure that her space would look sharp for years to come!

3. Enjoy your New Focal Point

Now that you have created this amazing focal point in your outdoor space, enjoy entertaining and relaxing with an amazing view!
